Overview

The Financial Intelligence Analysis Unit is Malta's AML/CFT supervisory authority and financial intelligence unit. It does not license financial institutions: the Malta Financial Services Authority licenses banks, investment firms, insurers and crypto-asset service providers, while the FIAU supervises all obliged entities' anti-money-laundering compliance and can enforce directly — in 2025 it received 10,721 suspicious transaction reports, carried out 150 supervisory interventions and issued 71 enforcement measures, with €1.34 million in administrative penalties. Its Director, Alfred Zammit, was appointed Vice-Chair of MONEYVAL for 2026–2028. Everything below is the FIAU's own data, from its FY2025 annual report.
