Credit Institutions

Credit institutions — banks — are authorised under the Capital Requirements Directive (CRD) to take deposits and grant credit. Authorisation in one member state can be exercised across the EU/EEA through branches and the freedom to provide services. Significant institutions are supervised directly by the European Central Bank under the Single Supervisory Mechanism. 3653 credit institutions are currently recorded in the EBA register. Significance classifications reflect the ECB's list of supervised entities as of 1 Jul 2026.
